DATE: 7-9 September 2018
VENUE: Empire Theatres, Toowoomba
In 2018 the Toowoomba Choral Society will perform one of the most enduring musicals of all time Hello, Dolly! as their major production. This show offers classic musical theatre without a hint of apology. It bursts with humour, romance and is boisterous and charming from start to finish.
In 1890s New York City, the bold and enchanting widow Dolly Levi (who has been played by a bevy of stars from Carol Channing to Bette Midler) is a socialite-turned-matchmaker and “woman who arranges things”. Her latest clients seeking assistance are the cantankerous “half-a-millionaire” Horace Vandergelder and a young artist named Ambrose, who is in love with Horace’s niece, Ermengarde. Dolly’s scheming soon involves Horace’s employees as well as a New York hatmaker, as she tries to cover up her own secret romantic designs.
Jerry Herman’s exuberant score is a show-tune bonanza with some of the greatest songs in music theatre history. It includes the smash hits “Hello, Dolly!”, “Put On Your Sunday Clothes”, “Before the parade passes by” and “It Only Takes a Moment”. Hello, Dolly! is energetic and filled with charisma and heart and is an eternal blockbuster Broadway hit. It is currently experiencing a Broadway revival to rave reviews.
