The Toowoomba Choral Society’s vision is to build a future in choral harmony through excitement, enjoyment and excellence in music. Our mission is to encourage the advancement of choral, vocal and instrumental music through community participation and enjoyment.
As a progressive and innovative Society, the Toowoomba Choral Society (TCS) embraces the challenges in remaining a viable volunteer organisation. We continually work with our members to develop a strategic direction that positions it for the future, while building upon its long and respected history.
TCS has its roots in the 1933 formation of the Toowoomba Musical Union, as the choir which represented the City of Toowoomba in the City of Brisbane Eisteddfod in that year. In 1940 the name was changed to the Toowoomba Choral Society Inc and in 1946 the Junior Choir was formed with Mr Mansel Jones as conductor.
With the Society’s growth, several rehearsal and performance venues have provided a home over the years. In 1958 with the success of the annual stage musical (commenced in 1955), the Society purchased its first property in Neil Street. Twenty years later the Bell Street Squash Courts become a purpose built hall with a practice venue and music library. In 1997 the Society purchased the Uniting Church building on the corner of Bridge and Raff Streets which now includes set and prop sheds, the costume house, three rehearsal halls and a venue for small performances.
Always moving forward…
The future of TCS is richer for its collaborations with other musical organisations, individuals and societies. TCS has enjoyed building on opportunities with the Toowoomba Philharmonic Society, Toowoomba Concert Orchestra, Queensland Pops Orchestra, the Toowoombells, High Altitude Harmony, QUMS, Chillingham Voices, Toowoomba Municipal Band, Shoebox Theatre Company, and the Empire Theatre amongst others from around South East Queensland and beyond.
As TCS moves into a new decade, our focus is on offering rich and varied local concerts and exciting high quality annual productions. We encourage anyone interested in participating in either the choirs or the productions to make contact with us via our Contact Us page or sign up to our eNewsletter to see what’s coming up next!
